One crucial aspect of training is cardio. Done right and you will not have to waste your life away on the treadmill.

Want To Burn Fat? Β Get HIIT!

Recently we’ve had a few people ask us about cardio and what we think are the best and most efficient ways of burning fat in as little time as possible, with or without gym equipment. Β Put simply, it is HIIT!

There is one incredibly simply and easy way. Β We do it as our main form of cardio unless we are carrying a leg injury. Β It is very simple, it takes just 15-20 minutes out of your day and will burn in total (including the after burn effect of HIIT, known as EPOC) as much fat as burned in 60 minutes.

If one can do as much fat burning in such a little time, why would one actually even consider doing long drawn out cardio that can actually in the longer term work against the body and its energy systems (see ATP and ATP-PC)?

If you look at them, they are actually designed for short bursts of energy in terms of their actual setup – one would imagine back in the day as we were catching prey to feed ones family, a long distance runner gave very little gain, one would think.

The actual HIIT set up is incredibly simple to follow and whilst extremely taxing, it is taxing for only 3-4 minutes in the entire HIIT session – that’s right – 3 to 4 mins running/biking etc. as hard as you can will burn as much fat as 60 mins steady state cardio!

Ok, sounds great – How do I do it?

  • Two and a half minutes of warm up, up to five minutes if your joints require it
  • 30 seconds sprinting/biking/preferred cardio device as HARD AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN
  • 60 seconds steady state cardio to cool a little
  • Repeat the above process another 6 time
  • Between two and five minute cool down, depending on how you need to recover normal breathing
