Often we get asked whether whey protein is useful for an aging adult or whether its a waste of money.
Read on…
What can happen without sufficient protein in ones diet?
Decreased muscle mass that happens with age (called sarcopenia) is responsible for reduced quality of life, disability and ultimately death.
What can whey do?
Whey protein stimulates protein synthesis and so helps maintain muscle mass.
How can you say this?
Maastricht University (in a study led by Bart Pennings) found that in aging men, 35 grams of whey compared to 10 or 20 grams led to more muscle mass being maintained, via protein synthesis.
What did they conclude?
That at least 35 rams of whey protein per day may prevent muscle mass loss with age.
Data taken from American Journal Physiology Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2012.
