Recently there has been claims put out there that fish oil (namely omega-3 oils) have been shown to cause prostate cancer.
Read on…
What was actually said?
All over the world people were proclaiming that there is a strong link between omega-3 oils and prostate cancer.
So what did the researchers actually say?
A study by the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center lead by Theodore M. Brasky found that “The consistency of these findings suggests that these fatty acids are involved in prostate tumorigenesis.”.
They state that the omega-3 are linked to tumour growth/cancer.
Are they right?
Well, no. The data is a cohort study – that is to say conducted at one time point only. Because it is a cohort study it means that a temporal relationship cannot be made. The temporal side is key to this conclusion, since fish oil supplementation can change omega-3 in the blood quite drastically. Amusingly, it did not actually look into mortality either – other studies show whilst it isn’t preventing cancer, it can lower your chance from dying from it.
So?
Well, the study really didn’t answer anything and leaves more studies to be done. Currently there isn’t enough data to suggest the statement made in conclusion to the study is correct.
Data taken from Journal Of The National Cancer Institute, 2013.
