Often one will hear that HIIT for clinically obese people is not recommended and they should stick to steady state cardio.

However studies  found fitness gains that usually took six months with standard steady state cardio when clinically obese people were studied, took just 2 weeks when doing HIIT.

The University Of Carolina study also found no difference in results between 1 and 2 minute rest periods.

The subjects practiced HIIT for 3 weeks and was a small study involving 25 subjects.

This suggests that HIIT may be an effective training method for overweight and obese people.
