Matt says…
I’ve never been one to talk about myself. I always felt that if there was something important to tell, it would speak for itself. When people have to talk about themselves, I usually find there is not much there worth hearing as their attempts only cheapens their accomplishments. In attempts to write a bio page about who I am, I have decided to simply answer some questions I often get asked. Here goes.
Questions often asked (scroll down to question to read response)
1. Whats your weight?
2. When did you start bodybuilding?
3. Why?
4. I see you are sponsored, I want to be sponsored, how?
5. How much do you bench press/squat/deadlift?
6. Any advice you’d like to give?
7. What is your diet like?
(1) What is your weight?
My weight currently is 105kg. It was 102.3kg on stage on 6th October 2013 West Midlands UKBFF competition in which we qualified for the UKBFF Finals. Last off season I was 124kg and I dieted far too long and I’m 110% sure I ate some good muscle. A lesson learned – cut for comp’s and not extended periods!
(2) When did you start bodybuilding?
I started in 2006. I’ve been training for 6-7 years now.
(3) Why?
An ex girlfriend had ground me right down and I felt less than a man. I wanted to become something more than that… as cliched as it sounds! Once I found myself in the gym daily, I found it a place I loved. And it’s a love affair that I’ve kept up ever since.
(4) I see you are sponsored, I want to be sponsored, how?
Its simple when you think about it, but not obvious when you don’t. A company wants you to give something to them. They don’t just want to give you freed products to help you because they want you to succeed. They want you to give them something back. Exposure to the people around you! By having a social media set up with many followers, you are far more likely to get a company interested in you. Not only will they capture you, but all of the hundreds of people that follow you or at least see your posts on social media. This means Facebook, Twitter etc.
(5) How much do you bench press/squat/deadlift?
Well, I rarely try for personal bests these days. I find they just end injury and pain. Not something I like. Previous personal bests were 182.5kg for bench, 260kg box squat and 282.5kg deadlift. HOWEVER, these days its far more likely you’ll see me on the bench repping 100-140kg for 10-15 reps rather than going for singles and similar on squats and deadlifts.
(6) Any advice you’d like to give?
There will always be critics against you, and your life. The bigger or more established you are/become, the greater number of them will pop up to take a shot. They will beat you down at the first sign of weakness on your part and prey on it. If there isn’t any shortcomings that can easily be seen, then they will make something up or look to do anything they can to bring you down. Ignore them, they are just noise – if you respond this gives them power. Ignoring them takes this power away…
(7) What is your off season diet like?
A typical off season day will look like the following:
- Wake – Oats/whey/berries/flaxseed
- 11am – chicken or turkey or fish/veg/nuts
- 2pm – chicken or turkey or fish/sweet potato or rice or similar/veg/nuts
- 5pm – as per 11am
- 8pm – Salmon or beef/sweet potato or rice or similar/veg/nuts
- 11pm – Cottage cheese/veg/nuts
If I stop putting weight on, I will add an extra meal in or add extra to the existing meals. Previously, I was consuming up to 7,000 clean calories per day. Not easy, I can tell you!
